Porthcothan lies within the Cornwall Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty (AONB). Almost a third of Cornwall has AONB designation, with the same status and protection as a National Park.
The site originally comprised of a small substandard dwelling which occupied a prominent position on the side of a valley in a small coastal village
Given the sites sensitive location within an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty and position within a County Wildlife Site both a Landscape and Visual Impact Assessment and Ecological Appraisal were commissioned to support the application.
The proposed sought to provide a significantly larger dwelling yet still limit its visual impact within this sensitive environment. We achieved this with a contemporary approach, utilising a mix of timber and stone to the main elevations and a sedum roof to provide natural integration into the rising land to the rear of the site. Mitigation measures were proposed to preserve and enhance bio-diversity on the site and soften any domestic intrusion into the landscape.
